Personalized Chalkboard DIY

I recently took the plunge and bought some chalkboard paint. I have since learned that there is a recipe for making your own chalboard paint in your color of choice, which I would like to try in the future. I purchased RUST-OLEUM’s chalboard paint for something that I knew would work! I would love to do a cute wall board for our boys, but considering that we are planning to move soon, I think I will leave that project for our next house!

For this project, I used 2 re-purposed cabinet doors. You could also use MDF and then frame it out with some trim, or just leave it as is! It depends on the look you are going for.

The supplies for this project are pretty simple, and depend on the look you are going for! This is what I used for mine:

  • Cabinet Door (s)
  • Chalkboard Paint
  • Brush
  • Paint if you would like to personalize your board even move!
  • Sandpaper if the door is unfinished

If your surface is untreated wood, I recommend using a primer first, as it will soak up the paint. Be sure to mix the paint really well, it should not be watery.

Now you can see in the above photo that this is a little thin. This is when I learned that I had not thoroughly mixed my paint! When I did the next one, it went on much thicker, but I still recommend 2 coats. Also, I did picture a sponge brush up above, but recommend using a standard bristle paint brush! The less “brushing” the smoother the finish. You  could also use a small roller for a very smooth finish!

You need to wait for at least 3 days before using your chalkboard surface, after which you can condition it with a piece of chalk, and it is ready to go! Post inspirational quotes (thank Jami for this idea) shopping lists, meal plans- whatever!
